Tributes to
J. Desmond Clark

The friendship that Bob and Laura Brain have had with Desmond and Betty goes back half a century, to the time when they were at the Rhodes-Livingstone Museum in Northern Rhodesia, as it was then. For us, this has been a really rewarding experience due to Desmond's unfailing cheerfulness, his enthusiasm for the science he enjoyed so much, and his constant encouragement, - qualities shared by Betty. Our lives have been enriched by these.

The photograph we sent, and which is displayed in the photographic tributes, is of Desmond at the Swartkrans Cave, South Africa, in July 1979, when he made a detailed study of the stone artefacts from the early hominid layers there and when Betty illustrated the tools.
