I spent a wonderful and very memorable
field session with Desmond and Betty in Ethiopia in the early 1970s.
Although conditions were rough, the camp was always beautifully
organized (right down to the pink toilet seat) and the archaeology
fascinating.
I will always carry the image of
Desmond fording a river, impeccably dressed in khaki, with his shoes
in one hand and his pants neatly folded over his arm. He had a style
all his own as did Betty and they made a formidable team. I wish
I had been able to keep in touch more.
