Two excerpts from interviews with
Professor Clark recorded in 1996 and 2000 (reprinted with John Clark's
permission) His mother's reaction to the 1938 Livingstone appointment:
"Don't worry, Dear, it's only for three years and think of
the experience." On possible jobs in Britain in 1938: "There
was one job in the British Museum . . the only question I was asked
when I went was "What do you know about Byzantine archaeolgy?"
I said "Nothing very much!" So, that was that and THANK
GOD! If I had got that job, I would have long ago died." Interviews
funded by Wenner-Gren, stored at the Society of Antiquaries of London,
recorded with pleasure by Pamela Jane Smith.
